Committee

Current Committee Members

Our current committee was established in October 2016...we are a mixture of original and new members, and thought we would tell you a bit about what the WI means to us and why we joined!

Sue Hughes, President

I have been a member of WIER since it started in 2012 and I am currently enjoying the role of president.
My inspiration for joining came from my late grandmother who was a proud lifelong member. Like her, I value being part of a warm and welcome group as well as learning from all the wonderful activities, outings and talks we have.

Hilary Youens, Treasurer

I joined WIER in 2012, when it first started. I had been looking to join a WI because I felt that it was something I would enjoy and preferred to go to one in the local area.
The committee all seemed very friendly. I knew that they were in need of a treasurer and so although I'd not had any training, I volunteered my services and joined the committee in 2014.
I love the fact that we have a mixed age range and that there a number of diverse activities on offer as well as the monthly meetings.

Ann Cockshutt, Secretary

I joined WIER just over 4 years ago, because I wanted to meet new people in the area and because the activities and talks in the programme sounded interesting.
I enjoy our WI meetings – they are informative and engaging and there is always time at the end for a drink, a lovely piece of cake and time to natter with other members. I also enjoy the other social activities and visits that are organised.
I joined the committee just over a year ago, as I wanted to become more involved and last October I took on the role of Secretary.

Kate Steer, Social Co-ordinator

I only joined WIER in January 2016.  Given that I am fairly new to the area and wanted to meet local people and also learn new skills.
I enjoy the WI talks, crafts and social events.

Judith Allen, Minutes Secretary

I have been a member of WIER since 2014 and I joined because I was looking for a social activity locally. I found a lively, friendly and diverse group of women of all ages, experiences and backgrounds.  They have inspired me to try new things and I have enjoyed so many different activities and interesting sessions.
I run every week with the WIER runners, have done the Sheffield Round Walk, been to the casino and made pasta! Learnt new skills and passed on what I know as part of the craft group.  What's next? I can't wait!

Danni Beattie, Website/Social Media, Social Co-ordinator

I became a member of WIER in January 2016, having only moved to Sheffield the year before, I was keen to meet new people, make new friends and learn more about Sheffield and what there was to do.
It was an excellent decision as I have met a great bunch of warm and welcoming people, made new friends, and tried new things I never knew to do before!
We have had some great speakers, I am now handy in a pub quiz...only about very specific subjects though!

Anita Bamford - Programme Co-ordinator, Porter Valley Group Representative

Hilary Jackson who was a founder member of WIER, is a great friend, and she asked me if I'd like to join. Otherwise, the thought had never occurred to me.

As time went by, I realised that in spite of being a member from the beginning there were at least 50% of the people that I didn't know. This was the reason for joining the committee (to get to know everyone ). Since joining I've organised the speakers and certainly become much more involved.
I actually enjoy organising the speakers. I like finding and listening to talks (to see if they're any good) which involves visiting a variety of other institutions and meeting new people...always interesting...if not always educational. I always enjoy visits that teach me something but am not interested in crafts, which is why I need input from a crafty person. Otherwise the poor WIER members would have nothing but lectures!

Anne Kober, Vice Treasurer

I've been a member of WI since WIER  started having joined at the second meeting.
I enjoy the monthly meetings and making new friends and have learnt a lot from the different speakers.
I am a member of the craft group and like going on any of the extra events I can manage.

Hilary Jackson, Pound Table & Founding Member

I have beebn a member of the WI on ER from its inception. I love the garden and craft groups. Have enjoyed the trips to Renishaw Hall and Wentworth Hall.
I believe the variety and friendliness of our members is key to its popularity

Jenny Rodgers, Draw & Porter Valley Group Representative

I have been a member for two and a half years, after being invited by my local GP.
I enjoy the camaraderie and the diversity of our meetings and social activities.
